ON OLD FORE STREET · SIDMOUTH

One street back from the Esplanade. Ten years and more on the same shopfront.

Sidmouth is a Regency seaside town that took its modern shape in the 1810s and 1820s, under royal patronage from the Duchess of Kent and the infant Princess Victoria. Old Fore Street is the original high street, set one block back from the Esplanade and the painted Georgian facades that face the sea.

Two hundred metres west of the gallery, the Triassic cliffs of the Otter Sandstone mark the western edge of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors who walk in off the seafront in summer often bring the colour of those cliffs in with them. A working list of Devon and national artists has hung here continuously since at least 2016.

2016
Earliest documented exhibition year. Nick John Rees lists Azure Gallery, Sidmouth on his artist CV.
2017
Year-on-year representation continues. Azure is a representation house, not a vanity-rental space.
2019

2020
Through the pandemic year Azure keeps the doors open and the represented list intact.
2023

SIDMOUTH · OLD FORE STREET

“The very fabulous Azure Gallery in Devon. An inspirational venue for a day trip near an unspoilt and atmospheric beach.”

A REPRESENTATION HOUSE · NOT A VANITY RENTAL

What makes a representation house different.

Many small galleries rent their walls. An artist pays a weekly fee, hangs their own work, and leaves a fortnight later with whatever did not sell. Azure does not work that way.

Three details that follow from that. First, the artists you see here are people we have chosen to back, and who have chosen to back us. Nick John Rees has shown here every year since at least 2016. Second, the shelves are curated rather than rented, which is why hand painted glass sits next to fused glass and traditional ceramics next to contemporary. Third, the same artist sells as original and as print under the same roof, so a forty pound visit and a four thousand pound visit yield work by the same hand.

  • Continuity. Year after year representation, not rotating fortnights.
  • Mixed tier. Originals and prints of the same artist, under the same roof.
  • Hand painted glass. Alex Gillo's technique is unusual outside London.

FAQ · THE FIVE WE ARE ASKED MOST

Five questions, answered.

Are pieces priced from a few pounds up, or is everything fine art priced?

Both. Original paintings sit between five hundred and four thousand pounds depending on artist and size. Limited edition prints of the same artists start at around forty pounds. Jewellery and small ceramics open at twenty five pounds. The point of carrying both originals and prints is so a single visit works for any budget.

Do you ship, and do you ship overseas?

Yes. Originals are packed in custom crates by our framer and shipped insured by parcel courier within the UK, or by specialist art shippers for international addresses. Email us with the piece and the postcode and we will price it before you commit. Prints ship flat in tubes within two working days.

Do you commission new work from your represented artists?

Sometimes. For represented artists who accept commissions (about half the list) we introduce the buyer and the artist, then step back. The gallery handles the contract and the deposit, the artist handles the work. Pricing is comparable to a stocked piece of the same size.

Can I bring my own piece in for framing or valuation?

For framing, we recommend a Sidmouth framer down the street whose work we trust. For valuations we are not a registered valuer, but if you have a piece by one of our represented artists we are happy to give an opinion. Email a photo first.

Where do I park?

The Mill Street car park is a four minute walk and signposted from the Esplanade. Old Fore Street itself is pedestrian priority. Disabled bays are at the Manor Road end of the Esplanade.
